Bhubaneswar Re-Explored: The city excelsior!

Bhubaneswar has come a long way from a small village surrounded by forests and mountains to a modern, and smart city.

Speaking of modern Bhubaneswar

With the city holding up the top position on the Union government's list of proposed smart cities, it is expected to grow and reflect even stronger in the coming years. There are several descriptors such as mobility, health, safety, and productivity to identify it as one of India's best-performing smart cities.

Although we can be proud of the numerous honours bestowed upon the city, we must also acknowledge that Bhubaneswar has approximately 436 slums and temporary settlements where thousands of informal sector employees, such as farmworkers, factory workers, and vegetable vendors, live and work to serve the city and its residents and earn a living.

Bhubaneswar: A vision of tomorrow

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission has chosen Bhubaneswar as one of the first 20 Indian cities to be built. Cities were selected based on feasibility and potential social and economic impact as per Smart Cities Mission.

In 2015, the Indian government, in collaboration with state governments, launched the Smart Cities Mission to identify and develop Smart Cities around the country, which will help pave the way for other aspiring cities. The purpose is to promote cities that provide essential infrastructure and provide a decent lifestyle for their residents, as well as a safe and healthy environment and the use of "smart" solutions.

Bhubaneswar: Smart city mission challenge

The strategy is centred on a citizen-centred approach, and residents have recognized ‘smart growth' as the top priority. The Government's Smart Cities Mission is a ground-breaking, revolutionary initiative that sets out the following key elements of a smart city:

       Requisite water supply

       Reliable electricity supply

       Sanitation

       Including solid waste management

Effective urban mobility and public transportation

       Affordable housing for all

       Robust IT connectivity and digitalization

Good governance, particularly e-Government and citizen participation

Safety and security of people, particularly women, children, and the elderly

       And health and education.

In the development of smart cities, strengthening basic education, technical training and qualification, universities and community colleges, e-learning facilities, lifelong learning, and educational technology advancement. With motivation and resources to excel, Bhubaneswar is exploring the new highs of quality education and innumerable career opportunities and has risen to the hotspot of new opportunities of new-age.
